Commitment to accessibility

Since the earliest days of the Web I have worked to make the internet more usable to people of all circumstances and abilities. In the early 2000s I was a Section 508 compliance consultant for both the Department of Transportation and the Department of Agriculture. From 2012-2016 I was a member of the accessibility team at IBM, and was accountable for the WCAG compliance for the Smarter Workforce portfolio of products. I continue to educate colleagues in multiple disciplines about why and how to build beautiful, usable, and accessible software.

Accessibility statement

This is an accessibility statement from Marion Summerville.

Measures to support accessibility

I take the following measures to ensure accessibility of this site:

  • Include accessibility as part of our mission statement.
  • Include accessibility throughout our internal policies.
  • Employ formal accessibility quality assurance methods.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. portfolio is fully conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Fully conformant means that the content fully conforms to the accessibility standard without any exceptions.

Additional accessibility considerations

Although my goal is WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance, I have also applied some Level AAA Success Criteria:

  • Section headings are used to organise the content.
  • Images of text are only used for decorative purposes.
  • Timing is not an essential part of the event or activity presented by the content, except for non-interactive synchronized media and real-time events.
  • Web pages do not contain anything that flashes more than three times in any one second period.
