Sendoso

Principal Product Designer

March 2023 – November 2023

As Sendoso’s first Principal Designer I was accountable for the gifting experience of our customers (senders and administrators) and their customers (recipients). In this hybrid role I managed designers, created concepts for a refactored gifting platform, and contributed to global product vision and go-to-market strategy.

Product Design Lead

March 2022 – March 2023

Founding product designer for the Ireland office; accountable for maturing the global design practice, particularly in strategic influence, DesignOps and recruiting. Concepted, prototyped, and defined experience roadmaps for multiple strategic initiatives while supporting the day-to-day needs of scrum teams.

VMware

Design Lead, Tanzu Developer Experience

January 2021 – March 2022

Accountable for a coherent and usable experience for application developers using Tanzu products. Collaborated with Product and Engineering leaders across Tanzu to articulate a scenario-driven, multi-year vision for the Tanzu portfolio. Collaborated with scenario-level product, engineering, and design leaders to align short-term milestones to holistic units of user value. Collaborated with design leadership to define and implement a framework and practices for narrative-driven product design.

Design Lead, Services Control Plane

April 2020 – January 2021

All duties as in my Principal Designer role, plus the Design Lead for a new programme that enables five user types (Service authors, Platform administrators, Service operators, Application operators, and Application developers) to create, manage, and consume backing services for enterprise applications running on both Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes.

Principal Designer, Pivotal Software

October 2018 – April 2020

Design leader for kubernetes-based solutions. Collaborated with product and engineering leaders within a Lean product framework to define product portfolio strategy within the domains of secure software supply chain and enterprise developer experience. Trained, enabled, and mentored product managers and engineers in design thinking, UCD, and user research methods. Designed and facilitated bespoke in-person and remote workshops for team and programme alignment, lean product and design thinking skills, and psychological safety.  Pivotal was acquired by VMware in April 2020.

Amazon

Design Lead, AWS – Internet of Things (IoT)

October 2017 – October 2018

Design Lead on a portfolio of services for securing IoT fleets. AWS IoT Device Defender was announced onstage at re:Invent 2017, went GA for connected fleets in August 2018, and was scheduled for GA on edge fleets in November 2018. Local key stores for runtime encryption on edge devices (AWS Secrets Manager on Greengrass) was scheduled for GA in November 2018.

Design Lead, Customer Service – Shipping and Delivery Support

December 2016 – October 2017

Responsible for UX design, prototyping, and user research for a product portfolio that included a new suite of tools that Amazon Customer Service Associates use to support Amazon Logistics Drivers, Shippers, and Recipients throughout the delivery lifecycle.

Design Lead, Customer Service – Project Azimuth

March 2016 – December 2016

Hired to radically rethink the user experience of Amazon’s internal customer service platform. Wrote vision docs, created concept prototypes, conducted generative and evaluative user research, partnered with product management and engineering leaders on scope and budget proposals, and presented to executive leadership. Technical constraints deferred project initiation to 2019.

IBM

Design Lead, Hybrid Cloud Integration + Design Thinking Educator

September 2014 – March 2016

Design leader on Systems Middleware Hybrid Cloud Integration and Project Firefly (a citizen integration property targeting online marketers). Responsible for day-to-day direction, management, and mentoring of a team of 8 interaction designers, visual designers, user researchers, and front-end developers. Designed and conducted in-person and online IBM Design Thinking workshops targeted at newly formed product teams, product portfolio leads, and executives.

Design Lead, MobileFirst Platform

November 2013 – September 2014

Design leader for the MobileFirst Platform portfolio. Built a distributed design team from 2 (me plus 1) to 12 designers and 3 managers in 5 locations across 9 time zones. Collaborated with product management and engineering leadership to drive the product roadmap to serve 5 customer and user roles across 8 Platform products. Evangelised adoption of IBM Design Thinking practices across product management and engineering. 

Senior User Experience Designer, Smarter Workforce

June 2012 – November 2013

Design lead for 4 of the 7 products in the Smarter Workforce portfolio. Led all aspects of user-centred design including persona development, information architecture, interaction design, and interactive prototypes. Provided tactical and strategic accessibility compliance consulting to product teams.

Completed a professional certificate in Culinary Arts and prerequisite coursework for MS in Nutrition. Freelanced as a usability consultant, marketing strategist, and information architect.

Digitas Health

Director, Strategy and Analysis

Strategy Lead on the first all-digital drug launch for a major pharmaceutical company. Created a measurement plan a nod directed a team of analysts to instrument digital media – email, Web sites, OLAs, 3rd party programs. Managed a group of 3 managers, who collectively managed 14 data analysts. 

Director, User Experience

January 2009 – April 2010

Creative and business strategist for a Lifestyle Modification Program (LMP) associated with the launch of a new obesity drug. Managed a team of 6 visual designers and UX architects. Cross-promoted into Digitas Health’s business strategy group.
